Embarking on a new sports adventure or taking up a new physical activity as a hobby can be exciting and stimulating! However, it is essential to ensure that your body is up to the task so that you prevent injury and are aware of any necessary adjustments to make while engaging in the activity or sport. At My Health Reassurance, we provide comprehensive sports physicals to help you begin your participation confident and informed about your body’s ability.
What is done at a sports physical?
There are two parts to a sport’s physical. The first part consists of a discussion or questionnaire between you and the doctor concerning your medical history. With this part, your doctor will want to know of any serious illnesses among your family members; any allergies or illnesses you have or have had in the past, such as asthma, diabetes, or epilepsy; any previous hospitalizations, injuries, or surgeries; any history with fainting or feeling as if you might pass out while exercising, and if you are currently on any medications.
Once the medical history evaluation is completed, a comprehensive head-to-toe physical exam will be conducted by the physician. During this head-to-toe physical, your physician will measure your height and weight, take your blood pressure and heart rate, assess your vision, check your heart with a stethoscope or ECG, examine your lungs, use palpation to evaluate your abdomen, check your ears with an otoscope, and your throat with a laryngoscope. The physician will also assess your posture, flexibility, strength, and the health of your bones and joints.
If your physician finds anything concerning with regard to your ability to perform in the sport, they may send you for further testing, or they may suggest modifications to incorporate into your participation so that you can participate in the activity of your choice without compromising your health.
How much do sports physicals cost?
Sports physicals are cheaper than most other kinds of physicals, such as pre-employment physicals, Department of Transportation (DOT) physicals, annual physicals, and college physicals! Sports physicals are less expensive because they focus on determining your fitness to participate in a sport, as opposed to the in-depth analysis of your health that other physicals require. At My Health Reassurance, we offer sports physicals for the low price of $50! Moreover, if you have a health insurance plan that covers sports physicals, we will be happy to accommodate that.
Is there a difference between a sports physical and a regular physical?
In general, regular physicals are much more comprehensive than sports physicals. While sports physicals focus on your physical health in the immediate sense, annual physicals assess developmental, emotional, social, and physical aspects of your health both in the present and future. Sports physicals consider your medical history and current health status so far as it presently affects your ability to participate in a sport or physical activity. On the other hand, regular physicals consider your medical history and present state to help you stay healthy both now and into the future. An annual physical exam might include immunizations, lab work, lifestyle change recommendations for heart health, monitoring of potential conditions, and more, in addition to the head-to-toe physical exams covered with sports physicals.
